Solar plate or photo-polymer etching requires no acid, and enables the printmaker to transfer images onto a light-sensitive steel plate, which is then exposed to UV light, the surface of the plate is then washed with water and dried, thus creating an intaglio line. The plate can then be printed in the same manner as an acid etched plate.

In this workshop images will be created on plates of A6 size. Participants can bring their own transparencies (up to A6 size), preferably linear (not tonal). Transparencies can be prepared at the school. Drawings can be made spontaneously on to clear acetate, and transferred on to the solar plate. Materials to bring: Permanent marker pens (thin/thick), gouache, paintbrushes, Indian ink, image on transparency (optional) apron/protective clothing.
