Week One:
July 14th - 18th
Life Drawing —Jenny Scott £70
17th-18th July Thursday-Friday 10-4 pm
This is a 2-day course suitable for beginners and everyone interested
in revising their drawing skills. Day 1 will be spent drawing, working
through quick poses to look at proportion and form, and then on to exploring
the figure-in-space with composition and tone. Day 2 will be spent on
one pose; expanding on previous ideas. Materials; pencils, erasers, charcoal,
Conte pastels (black, white and yellow-ochre).
Still Life – Vincent Milne £90
14th-16th July Monday-Wednesday 10-4 pm
A large still life will be arranged for students to work from with a medium
of their choice. We will refer to a variety of artists work Velasquez,
Chardin, Matisse, Morandi for inspiration. Students will learn skills
for exploring qualities of tone and colour, reflections and texture, rhythm
and shape.
Advanced masterclass in painting – Eithne Healy £90
14th-16th July Monday-Wednesday 10-4pm
In this course we will use first-hand (life/observation) and secondary
(imagination, memory etc.) resources as a starting-point to explore a
range of approaches to a selected theme or subject. Students will be shown
how to develop their work from this information using research methods
to strengthen and progress their ideas. This course is for experienced
artists, painters, or portfolio/foundation students who feel that their
current work could do with 're-energising'. Students can bring their own
materials and paper, but will be encouraged to use ink, charcoal, pencil
as core materials.
Landscape — Jan Malaszek £60
17th-18th July Thursday-Friday 10-4pm
Using drawing (and mixed media) as a way of exploring shape, tone and
composition in a landscape. Drawing as a form of 'active looking' can
help us transform visual information into elements that make a picture
composition. We will use a variety of approaches producing drawings which
can be scaled up into a painting.
Jewellery Making (with silver) — Ann Ruthven-Taggart £140
14th-17th July Monday-Thursday 9.30-4pm
This course is tailored for both beginners and those with some expertise.
The basic techniques of jewellery making will be covered through a series
of projects. Base metals such as copper and brass will be used initially,
progressing to silver rings, pendants, cufflinks etc. Techniques covered
will be: the shaping and forming of metal, joining, soldering, finishing
and texturing. Some materials included. Silver can be purchased at the
school.
Field Trip to Gallery – Estelle Lovatt £30 per session (total
cost £60)
17th July Thursday 10-4 pm
This is a two-part workshop given by our Art Historian, Estelle Lovatt.
The first session will be in the form of a visit to the National Gallery.
The second part of the workshop will take place back at the school on
Thursday 24th July when sketches made at the National Gallery will be
used to produce paintings.
Landscape Watercolours – John Crossland £30
18th July Friday 10-4 pm
Taking masters of modern watercolour like Singer Sargent and Winslow Homer
as a guide the class will work outside (weather permitting) or use photographs
and sketches of landscapes. The basic principles of wet into wet and dry
wash in watercolours will be explained and demonstrated. Watercolour paper
is available at the school but paints and palettes must be brought in.
Sculpture – Hiromi Scintu £130
14th-17th July Monday-Thursday 10-4

This will be an enjoyable 4 day intensive portrait class, with demonstrations.
Each day will start with a creative charcoal drawing of the model before
beginning the sculpture.
Week Two:
July 21st - 25th
Portrait Painting—Desmond Healy £100
21st –23rd July Monday-Wednesday 10-4pm
New class with experienced tutor Desmond Healy. A course from the model,
for beginners to experienced painters. The course will take students through
the main stages of creating a portrait. Starting with a number of quick
drawings to loosen up and enable us to concentrate on basic anatomy and
finding the strongest composition - moving on to blocking out the figure
with a limited palette. Finally the course will show how to integrate
the figure in space and how to balance the understanding of structure
with a sense of 'likeness'.
Printmaking – Theresa Pateman - £100
21st-23rd July Monday-Wednesday 10-4pm
This workshop is suitable for beginners or experienced printmakers. In
printmaking Dry-point is the method of scoring lines and textures into
a surface that can be metal, acetate or laminated card. This surface will
then have ink rubbed into it and printed with the use of an etching press.
Small editions of prints from the plate can be made. We will look at using
different surfaces to discover your preferred medium. Please bring: paintbrushes,
sketchbooks. Plates and paper can be purchased in the class.
Children's Pottery (Fairy Tales) – Kate Tilley - £130
21st-23rd July Monday-Wednesday 10-4pm
Children will be given the opportunity of creating individual works of
art which will be finished by painting with slip colours. Techniques will
be shown to build with coils, make tiles, and pinch pots. Children will
be able to choose their 2 favourite pieces at the end of the course to
be professionally finished, for collection in 1 week's time. Snack and
materials included but please bring a packed lunch.
Life Drawing — Mark Wydler £70
24th-25th July Thursday—Friday 10-4pm
This two-day Life Drawing Course will develop the student's ability to
see and draw the rhythms and proportions of the figure as a whole, by
using a variety of poses, ranging from a few dynamic ones of 3 minutes:
to medium length of 15-20 minutes and ones of an hour or more. Particular
attention will also be paid to achieving a sense of form and volume. All
levels will be catered for.
Beginners Drawing — Eithne Healy £70
24th-25th July Thursday—Friday 10-4pm
This course is for beginners or those wishing to refresh their skills.
Aspects of drawing and painting will be explored though a series of projects,
in a relaxed and supportive studio atmosphere. Students will be encouraged
to develop a personal visual language and response to their subject. Materials
pencils 4B-9B, charcoal, ink.
Painting from Photographs – Diana Constance £90
21st-23rd July Monday-Wednesday 10-3 pm
School Principal Diana Constance, the author of 'Painting from Photographs',
will be taking this workshop.
The course is intended to show how photographs can be used creatively;
the compositions and the light in the photos will be changed and manipulated
to enhance the finished painting. This course is not about copying a photo
but using it as just the starting point of the creative work.

Watercolours – Mary Treherne £90

This is a course for all levels, so will be suitable for beginners and
more experienced watercolourists.A course for beginners and those who
wish to improve their skills. We will be working from; flowers, vegetable,
fungi, fruit etc, as well as taking a day outside, expressing the individual
qualities of different mediums and how they combine to achieve the best
results. Materials: water-based pencils or crayons, watercolours or gouache,
300gm watercolour pad, 2 or 3 brushes sizes 2, 6&8 masking fluid.
Landscape – Desmond Healy £60
31st July – 1 August - Thursday-Friday 10-4pm
A course designed to allow students to work out in the landscape - on
Hampstead Heath and in the studio, working up sketches made on location.
The course will cover how to select a subject in the landscape, composing
and simplifying for best effect and will look at how to integrate space
and atmosphere into a landscape painting. Working from a variety of media,
students will be encouraged to create personal interpretations of the
subject.
Portraiture with a Difference – Mary Treherne £70
31st July – 1 August - Thursday-Friday 10-4 pm
This is a 2-day painting course has the added attraction of a characterful
model set against a colourful exotic background. The course will be suitable
for all levels. Most mediums can be used, with the exception of 'chalk'
pastels. There will be one pose for both days. Basic techniques/measuring
and mixing of paints will be shown to the class.
Basic Drawing – Derek Ogbourne £90

– 30th July Monday-Wednesday 10-4 pm
3-day course for the absolute beginner. It is about everything to do with
drawing: the hand, the pencil and the paper - although a pencil is not
what we will always use. We will cover all aspects of drawing for the
beginner and the accustomed 'scribbler'. Working sometimes from what we
see and other times from what we imagine, we will learn how to use line
in an informative and imaginative way to create form – how to draw
things as they appear; how to manipulate what we see to say something
else. Materials: small set of soft pencils 4B to 6B, a rubber.
An Opening into the World of Abstract Painting – Ake Arnerdal £90

You are invited to explore the diversity and challenge of the language
of abstract painting. By looking at the works of some artists who have
chosen this way of expressing themselves, we follow the way this language
has developed up to its role in the Art world of today. In this class
we also examine the area between representation and abstraction and learn
how to abstract a motif in different ways. We will work with still life,
photo and collage and you are welcome to work in all media.
Week Four:
August 4th - 8th
Botanical Painting –Helen Allen £130

– 7th August Monday-Thursday 10-4pm
During this 4-day workshop we shall be exploring summer vegetables and
their foliage. Leeks with their roots, carrots with their fronds and pea
and bean shoots and other sprouting seeds are all subjects that make pleasing
compositions. There will be other summer vegetables available to draw
and paint. All will be provided by the tutor at a small cost. If students
wish to paint flowers they are welcome to bring their own to paint. We
shall be working in watercolour and pencil. Please bring two clean jam
jars, hot press (smooth) watercolour paper, brushes and watercolours.
Some materials will be available from the tutor.
Portrait Painting – Douglas Druce £100
4th – 6th August Monday-Wednesday 10-4

Join Douglas, an accomplished portraitist, who will show you how to make
structured drawings and paintings. You will be shown how to use oils in
the traditional way as well as some of the special techniques of the masters.
Early booking is suggested for this popular course. Materials: oil paints
and canvas.
Children's Pottery – Chris Bramble £130
4th-7th
August Monday-Thursday 10-3 pm
Chris will be showing the children how to hand-build their own animal
shapes and shakers. They will also create chimes and mobiles based on
Safari and Jungle animals. The basics of hand building bowls, tiles and
pinch pots will be demonstrated by our very experienced tutor. Children
will go on to finish their work by decorating with slip colours. Work
will then be professionally finished and ready for a collection 1 week
later. A light snack will be provided (squash and biscuits) - children
should bring packed lunch or there is a canteen in which the children
may purchase additional snacks and drinks.
Children's Painting – Ake Arnerdal £130

August Monday-Thursday 10-3 pm
'What are the animals doing?' Create worlds or scenes inhabited by your
favourite pets or animals. Children's imaginative painting/drawing workshop
with all materials provided. Tutor and assistant present at all times.
A light snack will be provided (squash and biscuits) - children
should bring packed lunch or there is a canteen in which the children
may purchase additional snacks and drinks.
Still Life – Eva Swiderska £60
7th-8th
August Thursday – Friday 10-4 pm
An intensive two-day drawing experience examining and challenging ideas
of what constitutes 'good' and 'finished' drawings. We will explore contrasting
tensions of line and mass, relationship of scale to space. Please bring
diverse media: pencils, charcoal, ink etc., black and white acrylics,
various brushes and masking tape.
Week Five:
August 11th - 15th
Portrait – Mark Wydler £100
11th – 13th August Monday-Wednesday 10-4pm
A drawing and painting course that looks at drawing as the foundation
of painting. We will concentrate on how to achieve a sense of form with
colour and tone and how to create a good likeness. Beginners welcome.
Children's Pottery - Summertime – Kate Tilley £130
11th – 14th August Monday-Thursday 10-3pm
Children will be given the opportunity of creating individual works of
art which will be finished by painting with slip colours. Techniques will
be shown to build with coils, make tiles, and pinch pots. At the end of
the course the children will be able to pick their 2 favourite pieces
to be finished, ready for collection 1 week later. Snack and materials
included but please bring a packed lunch. There will be a 'Summer' theme
to this particular course.
Colour – Derek Ogbourne £60
14th – 15th August Thursday-Friday 10-4

This 2-day course is an introduction to basic colour theory and application
for artists, designers, film-makers and anyone who has to consider colour
design for work or pleasure. The course is mainly practical in nature,
so we will be working with paint on paper. Materials: Gouache paint (Winsor
& Newton), Flame Red, Cobalt Blue, Spectrum Yellow, Jet Black, Permanent
White (larger tube), acrylic brushes, palette, piece of melamine or glass
best – 1 ft. square, pencil, compass.
Impressionists' Still life and Floral Art - Douglas Druce

11th-13th August Monday-Wednesday 10-4 pm
The class will be producing paintings which call upon the skills
and techniques of the impressionists, in particular the work of Manet
and Renoir, to capture the freshness of their subjects, and the colour.
Special emphasis will be placed on their flower paintings. Oils are the
preferred medium.

This course is open to all skill groups and beginners are welcome. We
aim to design and make one and possibly two items using silver and base
metals. The course will cover all the basic skills required in jewellery
making from piercing out and forming to soldering and finishing. Students

Watercolour Masterclass - Life – John Crossland £70
14th August Thursday-Friday 10-4 pm
This exciting introduction to painting a life model in the unusual medium
of watercolour can be interpreted either as seated portrait studies or
as full-length paintings. The model will be put in a colourful exotic
setting suitable for the medium. Watercolour paper is available at the
school but paints and brushes are not provided.
Week Six:
August 18th - 22nd
Portraiture in Oils – Valerie
Wiffen £105
18th-20th August Monday-Wednesday 10-4pm
Valerie is a well known portraitist with several of her works in public
and private collections. The class is both for beginners and more experienced
painters. Valerie's basic technique of capturing a likeness and expressing
the mood of the sitter will be shown. Achieving the proper skin tones
of the model will be demonstrated.
Quick Oil Sketches – Valerie Wiffen £60
21st-22nd August Thursday-Friday 10-4 pm
Val will show the class the various techniques of making quick oil sketches,
which are so useful for landscape painting. The art of composing a landscape
on toned grounds used so effectively by Ken Howard will be explained as
well as the use of mirror to draw out a scene quickly and accurately.
Children's Drama: 'Kiki's Delivery Service'

Enjoy a fun-filled 4 day programme with our drama teacher, Miles.
Come and join us for a 4-day experience in the world of Hayao Miyazaki.
This is the story of a young witch, named Kiki. Kiki, along with her talking
cat Gigi, fly away to live in the seaside town of Korico and have many
adventures. We will paint and create our sets and props and write our
own version of this great story. Finally on the last day we will have
a presentation for parents and friends. A snack and materials are provided
but please bring a packed lunch.
Outdoor Sketching – Jenny Scott £30
22nd August Friday 10-4pm
A chance to capture perspective and light in August sunshine. We will
meet at the school before deciding where to draw. Materials needed: set
of graphite sketching pencils, putty and plastic rubber. Basic colour
pastel set for those wishing to work their sketches into colour, cartridge
paper, willow charcoal (cartridge paper and charcoal can be bought at
the school).
Solar Printing– Theresa Pateman £90
18th-20th August Monday-Wednesday 10-4pm
Theresa will be taking a 3-day workshop in Solar Plate Etching, as an
introduction to the beginner/artist-printmakers interested in exploring
new safe etch processes. Solar plate or photo-polymer etching requires
no acid, and enables the printmaker to transfer images onto a light-sensitive
steel plate, which is then exposed to UV light, the surface of the plate
is then washed with water and dried, thus creating an intaglio line. The
plate can then be printed in the same manner as an acid etched plate.
In this workshop images will be created on plates of A6 size. Participants
can bring their own transparencies (up to A6 size), preferably linear
(not tonal). Transparencies can be prepared at the school. Drawings can
be made spontaneously on to clear acetate, and transferred on to the solar
plate. Acetate will be available to work on, and for this you need to
bring marker pens of different thickness. Materials to bring: Permanent
marker pens (thin/thick), gouache, paintbrushes, Indian ink, image on
transparency (optional) apron/protective clothing.
Monoprinting – Krystyna Shackleton-Dziesko £60
21st-22nd August Thursday-Friday 10-4 pm
An exciting course following the tradition of monoprint practiced by Degas.
You will be shown how to create your image by drawing or painting directly
on a plate. Lace, thread or other fine papers can be used on the plate
to create texture and pattern. Paper will be laid on the finished plate
which will then be printed on our etching press.
