Week One: July 13th - 17th

The Art of Creativity – Michael Chaitow £90
13th-15th July Monday-Wednesday 10-4 pm
Explore your creative potential in painting and drawing, using the inspiration of nature and landscape.
Materials: watercolour and mixed media.
Level: Beginners/experienced

Oriental Brush Techniques with life model – Michael Chaitow £65
16th-17th July Thursday-Friday 10-3 pm

Working from the life model, students will be taught the traditional techniques of the ancient art of brush drawing. The brush will later be used in conjunction with other materials: reed pen, conti chalks and charcoal.

Sculpture – David Waller £135*
14th-17th July Tuesday-Friday 10-3pm
Develop an understanding of 3-D form through modelling in clay. The class will be working with a life model. You will create a finished sculpture, which will be fired in a kiln. Materials, clay and firing included.*

Jewellery Making - with silver – Ann Ruthven–Taggart £135*
13th-16th July Monday-Thursday 9.30-4pm
The basic techniques of jewellery making will be covered through a series of projects; you will progress from using copper and brass to making silver rings, pendants, cufflinks. Tools and some materials included.*

Portrait Painting and Drawing – Minna Stevens £90
13th July – 15th July - Monday-Wednesday 10-3pm

From initial drawings the class will use watercolour, oils or pastels to develop portrait studies. The aim is to work on effective techniques to represent the human head and face.

Semi-clothed Life Model posed as a Dancer – Mary Treherne £65

16th 17th July Thursday-Friday 10-3 pm
Theme: a dancing pose for two days. We will be painting the model using 'stage props' to take our inspiration from Degas and Toulouse Lautrec. Mixed media, acrylics or oils.

Week Two: July 20th - 24th

Basic Drawing – Eithne Healy £90

20th –22nd July Monday-Wednesday 10-4pm
This course is designed for beginners. Several aspects of drawing and painting will be explored through a series of exciting projects. Materials: pencils 4B-9B, charcoal, ink.

Life Drawing – Eithne Healy £65

23rd -24th July Thursday-Friday 10-3pm
The class will begin with a series of short poses using charcoal to study the movement and form of the figure. Longer poses will follow using the interesting qualities which mixed media can give to drawings. Materials: Charcoal, inks acrylics or watercolours.

Lino Cut Printmaking – Theresa Pateman - £95
20th -22nd July Monday-Wednesday 10-4pm
With Lino cuts one can produce wonderful images from the very simple and effective to the highly sophisticated. We will make simple black and white linocuts and colour separations. Please bring ideas/drawings. Materials available from the school.

Painting Leaves – Helen Allen £120
20th -23rd July - Monday-Thursday 10-4pm
In botanical paintings leaves are often neglected for the sake of flowers which are so much more colourful. However leaves can be as beautiful, and they are a vital part of any botanical painting. We shall explore perspective, texture and differences between lower and upper leaf surfaces and work on a small composition of leaves and stems. Materials: brushes and watercolours. Smooth watercolour paper for botanical painting will be available at the school.

Children’s Pottery – Noah’s Ark with Claire Bevacqua £130

20th 23rd July Monday-Thursday 10-3pm
The children will work together to build a fantastic ark, filled with an array of hand-built animals. As a group we will also create relief tiles, of mountains and trees, to form the backdrop to our story. Pieces will be decorated with slips and fired.


Week Three: July 27th - 31st

Portraiture – Desmond Healy £90

27th-29th July Monday - Wednesday 10-3pm
The class will create a portrait from quick drawings to build a composition with a selected palette. The course will show how to balance the understanding of structure with a sense of 'likeness'. Materials: charcoal, oils.
Level: Beginners/experienced


Drawing the Nude – Desmond Healy £65
30th-31st July Thursday Friday 10-3pm
The class will give the students all basics of life drawing; Quick poses to understand movement will be followed by longer poses where the anatomy and structure of the body can be studied. Materials: Charcoal, ink or pastel.

Drawing to Painting with Jan Malazek £90

27th-29th July Monday-Wednesday 10-4pm
This course will use landscape subjects in the vicinity of the School. We will use a range of drawing techiques which will be developed into paintings in the studio. Materials: pencil or charcoal, any painting media.

Painted Contemporary Basketry with Stella Harding £70*
27th-28th July Monday-Tuesday 10-4pm
This workshop will use flexible spun paper which can be painted on for contemporary basket-making. We will experiment with a few basketry techniques including hexagonal and check weave and bias plait weave. Students can complete at least two baskets. Materials*: Spun paper is provided but bring a few acrylic colours.

Painting and Drawing with Mixed Media – Mary Treherne £90
29th-31 July Wednesday-Friday 10-4pm
The advantages of mixed media are known chiefly to professional artists - this is a chance to learn their tricks and techniques. We will work with photographs, sketches and organic materials, using watercolours, gouache, ink, or acrylics to achieve original eye-catching, thought-provoking work.

Teenagers' Prep Course with Estelle Lovatt £65
30th-31st July Thursday-Friday 10-4pm

Children’s Pottery: 'Mad Hatters Tea Party' – Claire Bevacqua £130
27th-30th July Monday-Thursday 10-3pm

Imagine attending the Mad Hatters Tea Party. Let your imagination run wild. Using slabs, moulds and hand-building techniques we will work on recreating the party. All of our children’s classes have both a Tutor and qualified assistant present at all times. Snacks are available but please bring a packed lunch.


Week Four: August 3rd - 7th

Teenagers' Prep Course with Estelle Lovatt £65

3rd-4th August Monday-Tuesday 10-4 pm
A new course designed to equip students with the basic skills in drawing and painting which will give students a head start in preparations for examinations in the coming school year. We shall also undertake the understanding of art in contemporary societies and other times and cultures.

Beginners Drawing Course – Derek Ogbourne £90
3rd-5th August Monday-Wednesday 10-4pm
All aspects of drawing for the beginner and accustomed scribbler will be covered. Working from what we see, and from imagination we will learn how to use line to create form - and how to draw things as they appear and how to manipulate what we see to say something else. Materials: a small set of soft pencils 4b to 6b, an eraser.

Sketching the Landscape with Krystyna Shackleton-Dzieszko £65
6th-7th August Thursday-Friday 10-4 pm
We will create quick sketches working from local landscape and in the studio, as well as discovering various formats by sketching and using a camera as a 'sketch book'. Bring wet and dry media, sketchbooks, a camera eg digital, mobile phone camera, and two images for studio work.

Children’s Drama with Miles Anthony £130
3rd-6th August Monday-Thursday 10-3pm
Come and join Alice and her friends as she journeys through Wonderland. Enjoy the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and the Queen of Hearts as she tries to keep Alice prisoner. We will create, paint and make the Wonderland scenes and write our own story using the book as our inspiration.


Week Five: August 10th - 15th

Life Painting and Drawing with Vincent Milne £90
August 10th-12th Monday-Wednesday 10-3 pm
A comprehensive course in life painting using a model. Using Manet’s famous 'Le Dejeuner sur l’herbe' and 'Olympia' for inspiration we shall work on a contemporary response to the artist’s use of the figure. The course combines both the practical techniques of life painting with a look at one of the more influential works of the 19th century. All media suitable.

Watercolours with Valerie Wiffen £90
August 10th-13th Monday-Wednesday 10-4 pm
The acclaimed artist ('A Brush with Art TV') Valerie Wiffen will reprise her successful course in watercolour painting. She will concentrate on still life but may take students plein aire if weather permits.

Monoprinting with Valerie Wiffen £70*
August 14th-15th Thursday-Friday 10-4 pm
This versatile printing technique was used first by Degas. It has increased in popularity allowing the artist to work spontaneously to achieve special effects in colour and texture. This is a printing technique which can be done at home without the need of a press. Materials*: The inks will be provided, paper can be purchased at the school.

Painting from Photographs – Diana Constance £90
August 10th-12th Monday-Wednesday 10-3pm
School Principal Diana Constance, the author of Painting from Photographs , will be taking this workshop.The course is intended to show how photographs can be used creatively. The compositions and the light in the photos will be manipulated to enhance the finished painting. This is not about copying but using the photo as the starting point of the creative work. Materials: any medium.

Impressionists' Still Life and Floral Art - Douglas Druce £90
August 13th-14th Thursday-Friday 10-4pm
The class will be producing paintings which call upon the skills and techniques of the Impressionists. In particular the work of Manet and Renoir to capture the freshness of their subjects, and the colour. Special emphasis will be placed on their flower paintings. Oils are the preferred medium.

Derek Ogbourne - 2-day Colour Course £65
August 13th-14th Thursday-Friday 10-4pm
This two-day course is an introduction to basic colour theory and application for artists, designers, film-makers and anybody who has to consider colour design for work or pleasure. The course is practical in nature so we will be working with paint on paper. Materials: gouache, acrylic brushes, palette, pencil, compass.

Children’s Painting: 'Imaginary World' with Ake Arnerdal £130
August 10th-13th Monday-Thursday 10-3pm
What would it look like? Who would be there? What would the people and animals be like? Together we will build, paint and sculpt this imaginary creation. All materials are provided, Snacks will be available but please bring a packed lunch.


Week Six: August 17th - 21st

Portrait Painting – Douglas Druce £90
August 17th-19th Monday-Wednesday 10-3pm
Join Douglas, an accomplished portraitist, who will show you how to make structured drawings and paintings. You will be shown how to use oils in the traditional way as well as some of the special techniques of the masters. Early booking is suggested for this popular course. Materials: oil paints and canvases.

Abstract Painting and Collage with Ake Arendal £90
August 17th-19th Monday-Wednesday 10-4pm
There is a revived interest in the art of collage; the colours and shapes produced by working in collage give us an insight into the development of abstract painting. The class will create their own by using a variety of found materials. The collages will then be transformed into new abstract paintings using acrylics or other media.

Pastels with Valerie Wiffen £65

August 20th-21th Thursday-Friday 10-4pm
Both flowers and still life will be combined to make colourful exciting subjects for pastel painting. The different effects of pastel technique will be demonstrated by one of the best know artists in this field. Materials: soft pastels or oil pastels.

Printmaking with Theresa Pateman £95
August 17th-19th Monday-Wednesday
This course is suitable for beginners as an introduction to printmaking and experienced printmakers wishing to continue with their own projects. Starting with drypoint for beginners: scoring lines into aluminium and laminated card for beginners, moving on to hard ground etching. The three days will cover the basics in this fascinating subject.

Plaster Sculpture Workshop with Briony Marshall
August 17th-20th Monday-Thursday £100

Make a sculpture out of plaster. Bring along a previous sculpture, drawing of a figure or an image of a work which inspires you, You will first learn how to make an armature, and to mix plaster and model it and carve into it. Learn various colouring techniques to finish your work. Please bring overalls or old clothes.
